Inside the lra - uganda

Inside the LRA - Uganda
Feb 2007 Lured by a government amnesty, senior commanders from the LRA are coming out of the bush and speaking about their time with Joseph Kony. In this rare report, they justify their actions. "He is from God. What he predicts comes true", states Captain Ray Apire, explaining Kony's hold over his soldiers. "By making people suffer, he is bringing people close to God". Commanders explain how they interpreted Jesus' command to "Go and catch people", seeing it as an order to abduct children. For the first time in a decade, the government and LRA are involved in serious peace talks. But the conflict is far from over. Troublemakers are insane - china

Troublemakers Are Insane - China
June 2008 Chinese authorities have got a radical weapon against troublemakers: lock them up indefinitely in police-run mental hospitals. Written off as 'dangerously ill', 'patients' are often never seen again. Zhang, a democratic activist, was abducted by the police and taken to an institution where he's been detained alongside genuine psychopaths. As his sister tried to prove his sanity, it appeared that the motive was his political views. Another victim was incarcerated and force-fed pills for a year after challenging a court ruling. Coming out, she talked to human rights activists: 'What on earth is wrong with me that I must stay with murderers in one cell? Is there a law in this world?' Psychiatrists claim that 'patients' have pathologically distorted views of reality. Anyone opposing the Chinese government must be insane indeed.

Lake baikal - russia

Lake Baikal - Russia
Oct 1995 Lake Baikal is large enough to supply the world with fresh water for half a century and is one of the few remaining jewels in the Soviet crown. The only practical way to get around Baikal is by boat, in weather conditions which can alter dramatically from hour to hour. The lake is more hospitable to its 100000 freshwater seal population. We find a seal sick bay where the weaker animals languish on a rock. A small seal, with too many wrinkles on his neck, looks unwell and underfed. Many are dying from pollution, poaching and entanglement in fishing nets. Baikal's largest island, Olkhon, boasts a fishing industry and plenty of rain. It is also developing a thriving tourist trade. But as heavy industries pump waste into the lake, the greatest human impact on the lake is pollution. The biggest offender is a Cellulose Plant. A local environmental group complains that the lake's waste treatment centre is often closed. As tourism develops in its haphazard way, there is new pressure for legislation to regulate local industry. But in Russia, money speaks louder than law, and the future of the lake depends more upon good luck than good management. Produced by ABC Australia Distributed by Journeyman Pictures

What I Used To Know - Ghana
Thousands still detained in Ghana's witch camps To see more go to www.youtube.com Follow us on Facebook (goo.gl or Twitter (www.twitter.com In parts of Northern Ghana, poverty and fear lead to extreme abuse and the exile of people accused of 'witchcraft'. While many are killed or die from their injuries, hundreds are also forced to go to witches' camps. "We are praying for help to change perceptions in the community. If someone doesn't like you they just call you a witch", says Iddrisu Mahami, chief at the witches' camp in Kukuo. "People who are generally educated and know their rights never get accused of any witch craft. It's usually old women; old, poor women who have absolutely nobody." Ghana remains a very patriarchal society, meaning there is usually little that women can do to protect themselves. "Once the accusation goes out, you're damned whether you are innocent or guilty". With such practices being entrenched in the traditions and beliefs of many of Ghana's people, it is an uphill battle to phase them out. June 2011

The revolution business - world

The Revolution Business - World
June 2011 Democratic change has been demanded across the Middle East. But was what seems like a spontaneous revolution actually a strategically planned event, fabricated by 'revolution consultants' long in advance? Revolution consultants are the worst nightmare of every regime. Srdja Popovic was a founder of the organisation 'Otpor', a revolution training school. It was instrumental in the overthrow of Slobodan Milosevic in the 1990s and has now inspired a new generation of activists. Political commentators like William Engdahl are convinced Otpor is being financed by the USA. "The people from Otpor gave us a book in which they described all their strategies", says Ezzedine Zaatour of the Tunisian uprising. That book was written by an American, Gene Sharp, and is now considered the "revolution guide book", being used by opposition movements worldwide. As Optor release their latest gadget, a resistance training computer game sponsored by American organisations, world leaders are voicing their concerns. "This is called a gentle coup!", insists Hugo Chavez.

Kim Jong Il's Foreign Adventure - North Korea
North Korean villages in the Siberian wilderness? To see more go to www.youtube.com Follow us on Facebook (goo.gl or Twitter (www.twitter.com We take a madcap look at one of the weirdest experiments of globalisation: North Korea's deceased leader Kim Jong-Il exporting his people and propaganda machine to Russia in a bid for cold, hard cash. "You should see their way of living. They live in smelly barns in multiples of ten," a Russian police chief tells us as he drives towards the Korean village. Speaking to the Korean loggers as they take a cigarette break the picture is painted in even starker terms: "What he's saying here is that the majority of workers have a ten-year plus labour commitment to live and work in the middle of nowhere for almost no pay." So why do they do it? As ever the North Korea propoganda machine is present to remind the workers of the 'home land' and the wise teachings of Kim Jong-Il and his father Kim Il Sung. A sign at the town reads: "Kim Il Sung lives with us forever." Yet travelling into one of the strangest of North Korea's frontiers, it is clear that the hermit kingdom's isolationist tactics are not paying off in these camps. Solar fields - africa

Solar Fields - Africa
January 2009 Could it be possible to convert sunrays falling on the African desert into electricity? Then channel it towards Europe, providing the whole continent with unlimited clean, affordable sustainable energy? Yes, according to researcher Christoph Richter. 'Solar energy is a realistic option. The sun shines 30% longer in North Africa than in Europe, this place has such potential. Building these power stations in North Africa and the near east will create a type of energy motorway that will power through central Europe. Although centuries of European colonialism has led to African mistrust, Richter states that With technological advances and the right political developments, we could imagine a scenario where renewable energies supply 100% of the world's power. Solar energy is becoming a much more viable option for the future.

Oil turmoil - nigeria

Oil Turmoil - Nigeria
March 1999 This beautifully-shot expose takes you to the heart of the corporate/tribal struggle. Nigeria's impoverished oil-producing communities are outraged. They see few returns from the myriad of oil wells that pollute their villages. We see forests destroyed by disastrous oil spills, whilst Shell provides evidence to suggest many spills are sabotage, in order to gain compensation. But time has run out for the beleaguered multi-national: Ijaw youths issued the 'Kaiama declaration', demanding Shell leave their land by December. The deadline was ignored and the Ijaw have relaunched a new bout of forced closures and hostage-taking. Shell is powerless to defend itself without calling in the corrupt and vicious army. Wounded youths lie in crude hospitals, victims of the army's defence of the flow stations they fail to seize. Felix Tuodolo, signatory of the Kaiama declaration, says the crisis will continue:'We will keep going down to those flow stations. Our blood will flow.' He claims the Ijaw remain unarmed, but reports of armed youths training in the bush spell out a bleak future. Shell says it is ready to negotiate, but it may be too little, too late.

Meet the Frackers - USA
Fracking may have caused Ohio earthquake To see more go to www.youtube.com Follow us on Facebook (goo.gl or Twitter (www.twitter.com As oil stocks run low extracting oil from shale, or fracking, is the energy buzz of the year. It's happening worldwide, and in the USA in 34 states. But with environmental and health risks, is it worth it? In Texas they're used to big oil; for generations it has helped to forge the formidable Texas character. But spreading out across the state is the controversial process of fracking. It involves injecting huge quantities of water and chemicals into the ground, which shatter the shale and release gas and oil. It's part of an accelerated quest within the US for energy independence, to loosen reliance on the Middle East and shoot for homegrown solutions to energy demand. For those working in the industry it's creating rapid wealth and shows no sign of slowing down. "Every day, probably to the end of this world, we'll keep drillin'", says one rig worker. But with otherwise residential neighbourhoods becoming industrial zones, this dangerous process is starting to take a serious toll on the health of local residents. "They're here to rape this land, make as much money as they can and get the hell out of here", says a North Dakota farmer who blames fracking for her failing health. As this process gains momentum across America, fracking is fast becoming a dirty word. A Film By ABC Australia Distributed By Journeyman Pictures March 2012

Because they're worth it - china

Because They're Worth It - China
December 2003 Internationally, the definition for absolute poverty is living on an income of under a dollar a day. But the Chinese Government has a lower threshold for poverty: 66 US cents a day. Out of a total Chinese population of 1.3 billion, there are 42 million Chinese who are poor by this definition. This episode of Life looks at a scheme which is helping poor people, especially women, break out of the cycle of poverty and ignorance - by providing them with small loans, basic health information and education. As described in an earlier programme in this series on micro-credit in Bangladesh, Credit Where Credit's Due, these small loans bring many benefits to family life - and virtually all of them are repaid.

Hong kong - cage dwellers

Hong Kong - Cage Dwellers
February 2010 Despite its wealth, Hong Kong is leaving its poor to rot in squalid conditions. With one toilet per floor and just a few square feet to their name, thousands of cage dwellers live no better than animals. "Many can't afford three meals a day or even water, the rent is not even cheap!" says human rights activist Sze Lai. She introduces us to 79-year-old Dai, who has spent 30 years in a cage. Ten other men share his room. Piled up to the ceiling, their cages would look shocking in a zoo. A chief worry is hygiene. 8-year-old Jessica lives with her mother in a cubicle too small to let a grown man stand. She points to the only toilet on their floor: "I hate it. People above throw dead rats down here". Although the need for public housing is dire, nothing is being done to eradicate cage dwelling. With only half of the government elected by universal suffrage, the poor just don't have a voice.

Digging for trouble - israel/palestine

Digging for Trouble - Israel/Palestine
Jan 2008 Are Israeli settlers taking control of archaeological digs to manipulate history and consolidate claims to Palestinian land? Some Israeli archaeologists are starting to speak out. The Palestinian village of Silwan is located just below the ancient City of David, in the heart of Jerusalem. Archaeological digs here are under the control of the right wing group, ELAD. The constant threat of demolition hovers over people's houses. It's part of ELAD's program to take over and occupy large parts of Silwan and make it Jewish?, complains archaeologist Dr Rafi Greenberg. Locals have already defeated one plan to destroy close to 100 houses. But despite this victory, the nature of Silwan has changed beyond recognition. As Greenberg laments? The place I knew as an Arab village with archaeology, turned into a place with armed guards, a place with amplified symbols of Israeli presence?.

Congo's Tin Soldiers - Democratic Republic of Congo
May 2006 The West's demand for Cassiterite is fuelling the killings in Congo. Militias rely on slave labour to extract the ore, forcing locals to work in sub-human conditions. "Once you get down there, there's no air", describes one worker. "The rocks often bury us and you have to crawl through the tiny hole, using your fingers to dig." Labourers like him often go unpaid. They're forced to work at gunpoint by militias operating outside the control of the government. "Different armed groups do what they want with the population", laments minister Buta Muiso. Remember Sobukwe! - South Africa
South Africa reflects after ANC centenary To see more go to www.youtube.com Follow us on Facebook (goo.gl or Twitter (www.twitter.com As the world reflects on the ANC's struggle since 1912, South Africa also remembers a leader who is often overlooked by the international community: Robert Sobukwe, founder of the Pan-Africanist Congress. Sobukwe would never see his dream of "South Africa's youth, walking tall, in a country they call their own." He is a man with a remarkable legacy. In particular, his monumental call to action against the pass laws, on 21st March 1960. Heeding the call, thousands of black South Africans left their pass books at home and marched to their police stations, demanding arrest. "You had to give non-violence a chance. That was Sobukwe's mission." Protesters paid the price: police opened fire in the Sharpeville massacre and Sobukwe suffered years of imprisonment. But the protest left an indelible mark on international consciousness and helped clear the path for the ANC to change South African politics. October 2011
