Horse racing oddity: jockey misjudges distance

For some reason I find oddities like this May 16, 2004 race very entertaining. The Hasta la Vista Handicap at Turf Paradise in Arizona is run at what today is an unusually long distance of 1 7/8 miles. This requires two full circuits of the course, rather than the usual one time around in most races. Unfortunately for jockey Jorge Carreno, he forgets that minor detail, creating a very unusual sitation. On a personal note, in the early 1980s, I recall Hall of Fame jockey Jorge Velasquez falling victim to the same mental lapse in the 2 1/4 mile Display Handicap at Aqueduct. My father and I got a big kick out of the fans watching the replay cheering "come on Georgie" the first time around, as he was furiously whipping and driving despite having a mile left to run.

Horse racing oddity: maintenance crew nearly trampled

Date: August 19, 2004 Track: Del Mar I'm happy to report no one was hurt. There are two parts to this video. First is a clip of the "head-on" camera shot, which clearly shows three maintenance workers diving as they realize the field is about to trample them. Notice the bucket that they leave on the course. The second part is the full race. At the 2:29 mark, you can see where the maintenance workers scramble, but it's not nearly as clear as the head-on shot. From Steve Andersen's report in the Daily Racing Form: "Three members of the Del Mar turf course staff nearly caused a catastrophic accident in the seventh race Thursday, when they were forced to scramble under the rail to avoid a field of seven horses while replacing divots on the turf course. "The three men dove under the inside rail just as the field turned for home and had so little time to react that they left a plastic bucket on the course, which the runners nearly struck. "The incident occurred with approximately a quarter-mile remaining in a race over 1 3/8 miles on turf. The three men walked onto the course and began working when the field passed the far turn for the first time. They were alerted of the oncoming field by the screams of the jockeys."

Horse racing oddity: incredible stretch run

Donnaguska, a first time starter owned by Billy Hays and trained by Joe Woodard, makes a remarkable stretch run to win her debut by two and a quarter lengths at Hawthorne Race Course on October 23, 2008. As track announcer Peter Galassi noted, Donnaguska was "far, far, far, far back" early under jockey Israel Ocampo. The three-year-old daughter of Yonaguska was sent off at 17-1, the second longest shot in the field of nine. She is number three, but for most of the video that doesn't matter because you won't see her. According to the official chart she was about 23 1/2 lengths behind at the top of the stretch, meaning she ran her final quarter-mile in roughly :21 1/5.

Horse racing oddity: starting gate tractor malfunction

It may not have been as exciting as Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction, but as Mary Rampelllini reported in the Daily Racing Form: The featured ninth race at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark., on Thursday was declared a no contest after the starting gate was unable to be pulled from the racetrack because of problems with a tractor. Wagers on the race were refunded, while bets tied into multiple races were given an "all" in the ninth race. "We had a tractor malfunction," said David Longinotti, assistant general manager at Oaklawn. "We told it to go, and it wouldn't go. We'll obviously completely check out the tractor tonight, and hopefully we won't have any more problems with it in the future." The horses started to be pulled up at the top of the stretch in the 1 1/16-mile race. Jockey Calvin Borel, who was aboard the front-running Richwood Silver, noticed the gate and began shouting to his fellow riders while pulling up his mount. Falling of 3 jockeys

Uruj 13/10, Premier Diva 4-1, others 6-1 and over. The second race was where a major accident marred the proceedings. Premier Diva led the field past the 400-metre mark and Uruj the favourite was just being asked to quicken and was responding. Just then, Primier Diva (Nadeem) buckled and fell dropping the rider. Uruj collided with Premier Diva trying to regain and also fell. Benfica, who was right behind, banged right into Uruj and that brought the third horse down. Tommy Carmichael (Neeraj) was the lone survivor from the front bunch as he narrowly missed hitting Premier Diva and the horse jumped over Nadeem who was flat on the turf. Tommy Carmichael went on to win. Only jockey Aadesh Kumar escaped unhurt. Nadeem, who hurt his head, in under observation and jockey TS Jodha has a dislocated collar bone. Cordero on cordero - 1978 jockey club gold cup

Hall of Fame jockey Angel Cordero, Jr., offers his insights on the most famous moments in his sterling riding career in "Cordero on Cordero," a new video series developed by The New York Racing Association, Inc. As a jockey Cordero won 7057 races, including many of the most prestigious events in North America. In New York alone, Cordero won the 1976 Belmont Stakes, six editions of the Woodward (including five straight from 1981-1985), five runnings of the Suburban, and two renewals of the Whitney. In addition, Cordero won the Jockey Club Gold Cup three times, but it's his defeat in the 1978 running aboard Seattle Slew that's the subject of the first episode of "Cordero on Cordero." That year's Gold Cup served as the second of two meetings between Triple Crown winners Seattle Slew and Affirmed, but it was Exceller who would come out on top that day. In the video Cordero critiques his ride aboard Seattle Slew and explains why he'd like to have the opportunity to ride that race all over again. NYRA will release additional episodes of "Cordero on Cordero" in the upcoming weeks, giving racing fans the opportunity to hear more of Cordero's takes on some of the most historical events in racing history.

Jockey mistake - goes for home too early

Australian jockey Rhys McLeod 'goes for home' in the Moonee Valley (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia) straight despite there being another lap to run. 3000 metre handicap which was run on Thursday 24th January 2002. No surprise, McLeod's mount (Mystic Outlaw) ran 72 lengths last and the jockey was given a lengthy suspension. Note that the cameraman was fooled too as he tightens in on the 'winner' the first time around. The caller is Greg Miles.

2008 remington futurity g1

The richest race of the season to this point was contested on April 19 with the $519729 Remington Park Futurity going to Streakin Six Cartel. The 2008 spring meeting, predominantly Quarter Horse Racing, was the richest ever at the Oklahoma City track. Owned by Jose & Julian Angel of Marietta, Ga. and trained by Guillermo Valdivia, Streakin Six Cartel surged late in the 350-yard race to defeat nine other two years olds. Under jockey Debbie Freeman, Streakin Six Cartel finished a head better than Spit Curl Diva. Andorite, the top qualifier through trials for the futurity, was another three-quarters of a length behind in third. Streakin Six Cartel crossed the finish in :17.804. Away as the longest shot on the tote-board at 29-1, Streaking Six Cartel paid $61.20 to win, $28.40 to place and $9.20 to show. Spit Curl Diva returned $6.60 to win and $3.20 to show. Andorite, the beaten 3-2 wagering favorite, paid $3 to show. The Remington Park Futurity win was the first for all of the connections of Streakin Six Cartel, a 2-year-old colt by Corona Cartel from the Streakin Six mare Streakin Six Love. Landaluce wins the hollywood lassie by 21 lengths

On July 10, 1982, French and Beal's Landaluce, an absolutely brilliant filly trained by D. Wayne Lukas, gallops home in the Hollywood Lassie, a race that eventually would be renamed in her honor. With Laffit Pincay, Jr. aboard, Landaluce sets fractions of :21 2/5 and :43 4/5 on her way to six furlongs in 1:08, in just her second start as a two-year-old. After remaining unbeaten in five career starts, Landaluce succumbed to illness and died. She was named the champion two-year-old filly of 1982. Harry Henson narrates this tour de force.

$300000 citation handicap (gi) - friday, november 27, 2009

Fluke made a dramatic late run under jockey Joe Talamo to score an emotional upset victory for the barn of the late Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel in Fridays $300000 Citation Handicap at Hollywood Park. The Brazilian-bred was saddled by Frankels long-time assistant Humberto Ascanio, who sent out many stakes horses during a 35-year stint with the legendary horsemen, but not in his own name. Ascanio, who officially took over Frankels stable at Hollywood Park following the trainers death from lymphoma on Nov. 16, was the trainer of record and earned his first stakes win in the Grade I event. The gathering in the winners circle was a happy one for Ascanio and his family, including his wife Maureen and 15-month old grandson Jonathan, whom he held in his arms for the winning photo. It was also a big moment for 19-year-old Talamo, who came to Southern California a couple years back at the behest of Frankel. This is very emotional for me, he said. Bobbys the one who brought me out here. If it wasnt for him, I wouldnt be here. The Citation is the first race in Hollywood Parks Turf Festival, which features five graded stakes over the Thanksgiving Weekend. Frankel dominated the Festival with 17 winners in the first 17 years of the popular late-season event. Bobby told me to get him ready, Ascanio said. To be positive, he is training good. He was right.
